John Montgomery (1951-2005) was an epigrapher and illustrator whose travels in Central America first inspired his interest in the ancient Maya. He held degrees in art history from the University of New Mexico and taught art history at Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute in Albuquerque. He also authored HOW TO READ MAYA HIEROGLYPHICS, DICTIONARY OF MAYA HIEROGLYPHS, and TIKAL: ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE ANCIENT MAYA CAPITAL. His illustrations are included in many scholarly publications on Maya hieroglyphs.
