According to the author António Pacheco Jorge da Silva, who lives in Canada and was not present at the event, instead sending a text that was read during the launch, the book aims at “preserving the history and identity of the Portuguese community in Shanghai.” Francisco da Roza, president of the Club Lusitano (the Portuguese club in Hong Kong) presented the book, stating that it is “an important piece of work.” “There is a large body of work about the Portuguese community in Macau, but not about the community in Shanghai,” he stated. Stuart Braga writes in the introduction that “Shanghai was always amazing.” “For almost a century, from the first British concession in 1846, it teemed with life and prosperity, and its growth was explosive,” he describes, adding that the Portuguese Community in Shanghai kept on “changing fortunes with compassion and discernment.” Also according to Stuart Braga, the book “illustrates their lives with photographs that speak just as powerfully.” António Pacheco Jorge da Silva had previously published two pictorial history books, one of them about the Portuguese living in Hong Kong and another about the Macanese in the US State of California.
