What makes a font passive aggressive?
A font is just a font until it’s combined with words and other elements. Now it adds layers of meaning that you interpret instinctively, before you even read the words. It’s similar to the assumptions you make about a person’s mood from their facial expression, tone of voice or their body language. Fonts create nonverbal communication for written words.
A beautiful font can become passive aggressive in the right context. Nasty words styled with curves and flourishes so they feel like a compliment, even though it’s really an insult. Or a friendly message delivered with spiky, pointy letters, so it feels aggressive even though the words sound nice.
