About this title

Synopsis:

John Emmerich Edward Dalberg Acton, one of the great intellectual figures of the nineteenth century, is well known not only to scholars but also to a wider circle as the author of "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely." It is an aphorism frequently quoted but rarely correctly. Acton as a public figure has not gone unnoticed; his work as an historian, editor, philosopher and political theorist is mentioned in a vast number of works on the nineteenth century, but his private life is rather more neglected. There is, indeed, no really satisfactory account of Acton the man, the personality behind the figure, and hence this journal, brief though it is, may have value in giving something of him as a youth, showing that he commanded powers of observation and description that were beyond his years.
