About this Item

560 (of 577) pp. Lacks final 8 leaves of index. Title page and first twelve pages of text replaced by old Xeroxes. This is a unique copy of a rare book. Only 1200 copies were printed in Williamsburg in 1769. This copy was stolen by two union Soldiers from a law office early in 1861 almost certainly in Northern Virginia. After a skirmish near Gloucester Point in June of 1861, Dr. Jefferson Hughes, while attending the wounded on the battlefield, after the battle found the book. According to a newspaper account in the Virginia Pilot of Norfolk, Virginia in a photo feature published on Sunday March 18, 1928(copy of story included) "Doctor Hughes stopped his work among the dead and wounded. A leather-bound book arrested his attention. A strange sight, that of a book lying amid the wreckage of war. Naturally he stooped to pick it up, little thinking at the time that he was preserving a copy of the first code of Virginia. .It’s first 12 pages were missing" Bridges, J. Malcolm Virginia - Pilot. (March 18, 1928) Norfolk, VA: The book remained in the Hughes family for about 130 years - A battlefield relic and heirloom. We acquired it from the estate of the widow of the great grandson of Dr. Hughes. The provenance is excellent. Traveling with the book is a copy of the feature story from the March 18, 1928 Virginia Pilot, the Norfolk, Virginia newspaper. The story includes photos of the book as well as a photo of Dr. Jefferson Hughes, the Savior of the book. This is an important Civil War battlefield relic as well as a key book of Virginia legal history. Rare, unusual unique. our scanner plate too small to show the entire back or front of this large folio colonial law book. Size: Folio. Bookseller Inventory # 007014
