Brown calf leather spine scuffed, spine head worn even with text block's top edge, extended slender splitting along front and rear joints but with hinges firm, original red leather title label with vertical gilt stamped printing still bright; light bluish-green paper over boards, staining and soiling to both boards but with former strongest at top of front board partially obscuring ownership ink signature of Jno. Y. Kilpatrick. Strong foxing/toning to initial leaves progressively diminishing to about page 40; strong toning arising again to rear endpapers and flyleaves; some other scattered light foxing to interior pages; same owner's ink initials on front free endpaper verso with ink signature on opposing front flyleaf recto. Binding is firm. A good copy of a scarce book. Camden, Wilcox County, Alabama attorney John Young Kilpatrick (1835-1917) served as a Captain in a Confederate Army cavalry regiment under Colonel William Wirt Adams and was elected to the state legislature among other accomplishments. {Bibliographical reference: Parrish & Willingham #2620.}. Polished brown calf leather spine scuffed, original red leather title label with vertical gilt stamped printing still bright, small chip at bottom of label with two tears causing label to partially lift up front spine, handwritten ink notation under label, 1.75cm chip at spine heel with underlying quires exposed. Blue paper over boards, light staining to boards with tearing to paper along edges and worn corners, boards' upper corners slightly curled. Ink ownership signatures of Jno. Y. Kilpatrick on both front and rear endpapers. Moisture staining to early leaves inclusive to page 32; early leaves also with toning at margins with pages 7-40 having varied toning to text portions of pages too; occasional light toning to other leaves; rear endpapers soiled too. Binding is firm. A good+ copy of a scarce book.
