12mo. (20 cm.) [6]7-175[1]p. Decorated endpapers. Tan cloth with green letters on the spine and with a vignette in green on the front cover of a satyr playing a pipe. Some wear to extremities with the corners just barely rubbed through, top and bottom of spine show signs of being ready to fray, cloth slightly soiled, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. A novelette set in California in the early 1900s. Born in Vinton, Iowa, William Hempstead Porterfield [1872-1927] was a journalist and newspaper publisher. Among others, he wrote a daily column for the San Diego Sun from 1919 until his death. He founded several newspapers, including Sacramento Star (1904) and the Ventura County Star (1925), as well as buying and managing several newspapers. In addition to a syndicated story of his foreign travels he published AN ADVENTURE IN PYRAMIDS, a novel of newspaper life, apparently his only novel. He died on September 2, 1927 in San Diego.
