Description:

Doyle, A(rthur) Conan. ADVENTURES OF GERARD. London: Newnes, [1903]. Illustrations by W. B. Wollen. FIRST EDITION. A Fine, square copy with only the most minimal wear, really as nice as it gets. In original publisher's cloth decorated in gilt. Small blind-stamp of W. H. Smith & Son, London on front free endpaper. Doyle had bigger and better heroes, of course, but none so comical and hilariously portrayed as is vain, egotistical Etienne Gerard, a French brigadier serving during the Napoleonic Wars. He thinks he's the best soldier and lover that ever lived and all his deeds are efforts to prove it. As with the Sherlock Holmes stories, Brigadier Gerard first appeared in the Strand Magazine in stories published between 1900-1903. THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES was produced just one year before in a similar size and format. Surprisingly scarce in collector's condition and a worthy addition to a Conan Doyle collection.
