Book Description D. Appleton-Century, New York, 1941. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+. First Edition. (vi), 290 pages; First edition of this Louisiana author's first book. A fantasy novel set in ancient Greece. The story of a Grecian faun named Lykos, who, after becoming the lover of Aphrodite, is endowed with immortality and the power to enter the human body, male or female, of his choice. From an idyllic marriage to a Cretan maid, the faun moves to Egypt, where he takes part in the cruel intrigues and orgiastic splendors of that magnificent court. Some toning at endpaper fold from binding glue, chipping at top edge. The handsome dustjacket design is by the noted Louisiana artist Caroline Wogan Durieux (1896-1989), a New Orleans native of Creole descent. She lived in Mexico in the late 1920s & early 1930s where her work attracted the attention and praise of Diego Rivera. At the time this novel was published Durieux was director of the WPA Federal Art Project in New Orleans, where Arthur MacArthur was working. A Bleiler fantasy title(1978 Checklist p. 128). ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings. Bookseller Inventory # 40511
