Hardcover; H 29.75cm x L 23.5cm. Original dark brown cloth. Light rubbing to boards with corners worn; top 16cm of spine's surface cloth perished with underlying mesh cloth backstrip intact and quire tips exposed at head; spine heel worn even with text block's bottom edge; front board's gilt stamped vignette and spine heel's copper stamped vignette remain bright. Cloth tearing lengthwise along front joint but hinge remains firm as does binding overall. Varied foxing and toning to leaves. Pictorial title page has triple imprint "New York - Boston - Albany: D. Appleton & Co and Wiley & Putnam - Gould, Kendall & Lincoln - Charles Van Benthuysen, Printer" whereas as text title page specifies "Albany [NY]: | printed by C. Van Benthuysen. | 1854." Forty-seven delightful color plates featuring outstanding images of insects particularly of butterflies and moths. A fair copy.
