Book Description New Directions (1945), New York, 1945. Hardcover. Condition: Very good +. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good -. First Edition. Octavo, 292pp., illustrated. A very good copy in grey cloth, crisp and clean, with a nick at the top of the rear board near the crown and shallow spoling to the bottom of the front board. Previous owner's bookplate on the front paste-down, mostly concealed by the jacket flap. Dust jacket (second issue, with Miller's photo on rear panel) about very good with some chips and creases at the extremities, including shallow (1/8") loss at the crown, and a small pen marking on the rear flap. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Miller on the half-title page: "For Neil McAleer - Would have used original title - "Max and the White Phagocytes" or "Onward Christian Soldiers." Henry Miller 11/14/79." There is also a laid-in note from the subject of the inscription, reading: "Neil McAleer / What would the title be today? Would appreciate photo signed too, if possible." Evidently the precocious collector sent his book to Miller with a question, and the gregarious, sarcastic Miller answered his question by way of inscription. "Max and the White Phagocytes" is the title of a slightly earlier collection of essays by Miller, published overseas. The photo requested by McAleer, if it exists, is not present. A great inscription on a less-than-stellar, but presentable copy. Seller Inventory # 2300
