About this title

Synopsis:

As the military attempts to maintain order in dystopian, twenty-first-century Neo-Tokyo, biker gang leader Kaneda's friend Tetsuo is taken by the government after they run across a rebel plot to free a child with psycho-kinetic powers.

From Publishers Weekly:

This "cine-manga" adaptation of the animated film Akira is an odd beast. The film was adapted from Otomo's lengthy comic book series of the same name, making this new five-book series a kind of reverse adaptation. The format consists of animation cels cut up and arranged with word balloons in order to resemble comic book panels. The story takes place in 2019. A gang of troublemaking kids in postapocalyptic Neo-Tokyo, led by Kaneda, runs into a mysterious child with powerful psychic abilities. This draws them into the top-secret Akira project, an entanglement that resonates deeply in the personal lives of Kaneda and company, as well as the fate of the entire world. In both comic book and film form, Akira is one of the most compelling science fiction tales of recent years, full of remarkable imagery, both drawn and animated, and real human pathos. Although this version retains the originals' spirit originals, it's missing the dynamics that made them work: the comic's depth of character and detail, and the film's tremendous momentum and innovative animation. In fact, the most captivating aspect of this volume is its strange attempt to make itself resemble a comic book through cropping the cels, yet staggering them in inventive layouts to imitate the film's pacing. But this approach to storytelling never transcends the pervasive feeling of borrowed imagery, so it fails to take on a life of its own. Furthermore, the book's production isn't as sharp as it could be: the cels are frequently blurry, and the color, so vibrant onscreen, is washed out.

CUSTOMER SERVICE:

I try to provide excellent customer service. Feel free to check out my feedback,
and compare with other sellers.

I sell a lot of collectible items, and I package them well. I use the golden
rule of packaging. I ship things the way I would like to receive them.

If you have any questions about an item. Please ask BEFORE ordering.

RETURNS AND REFUNDS:

  1. All buyer returns are subject to a 15% restocking fee (with the exception of seller mistakes, see point 2 below; or orders that are cancelled by the buyer BEFORE they ship). This includes orders made by mistake; buyers remorse; not the item you meant to order; not what your loved one wanted for Xmas or birthday,
    etc.

Original or return postage will not be refunded.

So, make sure you want to order something BEFORE you purchase.

Feel free to ask any questions for clarification before ordering. I try to get back to messages quickly.

If an item is returned damaged, higher restocking fees may apply, so make sure returned items are well-packaged and insured.

  1. If I make a mistake with an order (hopefully this will not happen) I will assume all costs for returns and refunds.

I don't want someone else to pay for a mistake I make... but don't want to pay for someone else's mistake, either.

Please remember, it takes up time to give great customer service and provide quality packaging of items, so make sure you ask questions before ordering, and don't order something you are not sure about.
