About the Book

We're sorry; this specific copy is no longer available. Here are our closest matches for ALICE IN WONDERLAND & THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS by Carroll, Lewis (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson).

Description:

Carroll, Lewis (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson). ALICE IN WONDERLAND & THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS. New York: A. Wessels, (1900). With 16 Full-Page Illustrations by Blanche McManus. First Edition. Large 8vo. A NEAR FINE copy, rare thus, in original publisher's light blue cloth decorated in red and black. The firm of Mansfield & Wessels printed individual first editions of the two Lewis Carroll Alice stories in 1899 (hard-to-find and usually in deplorable state). Having perhaps fed Mansfield (the illustrator's husband by the way) to the Cheshire Cat, Wessels soldiered on by himself and one year later produced under his solo imprint this first edition of both books within the same covers. Blanche McManus (1869-1935, a Southern Belle reared in Louisiana and Mississippi) was the first artist after John Tenniel, on either side of the Atlantic, to interpret the Alice characters and she did a splendid job in making sure her work was not the least bit derivative of Tenniel's imagination; she had her own special point of view and surely no collection of Alice illustrators is complete without her version. This the first time we've had a copy approaching fine condition; there is just light wear to the extremities and a little light finger-soiling to a few pages and back cover. An opportunity for the condition-conscious collector. Please see our many other Alice books. Bookseller Inventory #

Book Description London, UK: MacMillan, 1996, 1st UK Edition Thus, First Printing, London, England, 1996. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. John Tenniel, with Colouring By Harry Theaker and Diz Wallis (illustrator). First Edition. ----------2 volumes, hardcovers, about 7.25 x 9.75 inches, both are Near Fine copies in Near Fine dustjackets, both in uniform format and condition, both look close to new, both are housed in a lightly rubbed Near Fine slipcase which is also bedecked with Tenniel illustrations, cover illustration for W'Land shows Alice talking to the Cheshire Cat, cover for Glass shows Alice talking with Humpty-Dumpty, a lovely set with all colour illustrations, Tenniel's original illos were in b&w but Macmillan issued an edition in 1911 with 16 coloured illustrations with the colouring done by Theaker, Macmillan then commissioned Wallis to colour all the remaining illos, In both instances the artist coloured proofs taken from the original wood blocks so that their colouring remains faithful to Tenniel's original drawings, as well this edition retains the original positioning (as much as possible) of the illustrations as agreed by Tenniel and Carroll from the 1st editions, this edition also contains Christmas Greetings / 'to all child-readers of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland’ which was inserted as a leaflet in the 1871 Christmas issue / Wasp in a Wig which Carroll intended to appear in THROUGH / An Easter Greeting which was omitted from the 1897 edition, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and NOT a generic photo.
