About the Book

We're sorry; this specific copy is no longer available. Here are our closest matches for ALICE IN WONDERLAND & THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS by Carroll, Lewis (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson).

Description:

Carroll, Lewis (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson). ALICE IN WONDERLAND & THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS. New York: A. Wessels, (1900). With 16 Full-Page Illustrations by Blanche McManus. First Edition. Large 8vo. A NEAR FINE copy, rare thus, in original publisher's light blue cloth decorated in red and black. The firm of Mansfield & Wessels printed individual first editions of the two Lewis Carroll Alice stories in 1899 (hard-to-find and usually in deplorable state). Having perhaps fed Mansfield (the illustrator's husband by the way) to the Cheshire Cat, Wessels soldiered on by himself and one year later produced under his solo imprint this first edition of both books within the same covers. Blanche McManus (1869-1935, a Southern Belle reared in Louisiana and Mississippi) was the first artist after John Tenniel, on either side of the Atlantic, to interpret the Alice characters and she did a splendid job in making sure her work was not the least bit derivative of Tenniel's imagination; she had her own special point of view and surely no collection of Alice illustrators is complete without her version. This the first time we've had a copy approaching fine condition; there is just light wear to the extremities and a little light finger-soiling to a few pages and back cover. An opportunity for the condition-conscious collector. Please see our many other Alice books. Bookseller Inventory #

Book Description Collector's Library, London, 2004. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+. John Tenniel. (illustrator). 283 pp, 6 3/16" H. Crimson cloth with gold lettering/ship on spine, blind stamped ship on front board. All edges gilt, patterned endpapers, integral ribbon bookmark. B&w illustrations. "When Alice tumbles down, down, down a rabbit hole one hot summer's afternoon in pursuit of a White Rabbit she finds herself in Wonderland. And here begin the fantastical adventures that will see her experiencing extraordinary changes in size, swimming in a pool of her own tears and attending the very maddest of tea parties. For Wonderland is no ordinary place and the characters that populate it are quite unlike anybody young Alice had ever met before. In this imaginary land she encoutners the savagely violent Queen, the lachrymose Mock Turtle, the laconic Cheshire Cat and the hookah-smoking caterpillar, each as surprising and outlandish as the next. 'Through the Looking-Glass' continues Alice's bizarre adventures, in which she meets more outlandish creations, including the Red Queen, the White Queen, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, Humpty Dumpty and the White Knight." Book is clean and bright. Dust jacket hasminor wrinkle a top of spine, very minor rubbing. Bookseller Inventory # 29131
