Near fine with just hints of wear to extremities, cloth clean and bright, previous owner¿s name on front free endpaper (Mabel. C. Field), else near fine to fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. This is an account of the work of Wycliffe Bible Translators among the Mazatec Indians in Chalko, Mexico in the 1930s with a final chapter tracing developments from 1939-1953. Eunice V. Pike wrote several books, including on the linguistics of Bible translation, e.g., with Raymond S. Larsen she wrote HUASTECO INTONATION AND PHONEMES (1949, Mayan language). Born in 1913 in East Woodstock, CT, Pike graduated from the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing, after which she joined the third session of linguistics organized by Cameron Townsend. These training courses became the basis of the Summer Institute of Linguistics (now SIL), Wycliffe Bible Translators. This was the beginning of Pike¿s distinguished career in linguistics and Bible translation. She and co-worker Florence Hansen Cowan, the first single women to serve with SIL, began studying the language and preparing for language development service in Mazatec-speaking communities in Mexico. Pike¿s brother, noted linguist and scholar Kenneth L. Pike, was working in a nearby community and they sometimes collaborated on language research. Bookseller Inventory # 008245
