About this Item

According to the Library of Congress "a landmark Hebrew language childrens book", printed 1923 (first) in Berlin, verses by L. Kipniss and beautiful illustrations, one letter in gold per page with verse underneath showing one object or animal starting with this letter, for instance, "het" = "hasidah" (Storch), duck, camel, turkey, pretzel, arrow, fox, roses, a girl feeding white pigeons, and so on, heavy coated pages. The artwork is by Z. Raban (1890-1970), main artist of the Bezalel Art Academy founded 1903 in Jerusalem by Zionist Boris Schatz. The Bezalel Academy was supposed to serve the same purpose as the Wiener Werkstaette, William Morris, Tiffany, etc, - to create a new decorative art direction. It was printed in Berlin due to lack of high quality printing in Palestine at that time, Verlag "Hasefer S. D. Saltzmann, printed by Richard Labisch, Graphische Kunstanstalt GmbH. The first page in back is in German. The rest of the book in Hebrew only. The modest boards are scuffed along the edges and corners, the fine cloth spine is splitting along edge of backboard. The gutters are weakened and starting to crack on ends. The body of the book with illustrations and verses below ea one is in very good condition - except for one page w diagonal crease, Rare, great collectible. Bookseller Inventory # 003079
