Description:

Flawed copy. First edition (not stated but with matching dates upon title and copyright pages). Collates as [fp], [advertising leaf evidently as pages 1-2], [title/copyright as 3-4], [dedication/essay as 5-6], [Preface/Contents as 7-8], [9], 10-16, {binding error 9-16 duplicated}, 17-184, [lacking pages 185-186 with remnant stub present at gutter], 187-206, [2 - single blank leaf with no adjoining stubs at gutter], [213], 214-223, [5], i-xv, [1], [rfep], [rp]. Hardcover: H 22.5cm x L 14.5cm. Original dark maroon paper over semi-rigid cardstock boards; both front and rear boards are detached from saddle-sewn bound text block; boards still attached to one another by original but well worn and soiled spine cloth which has large loss at head and retains only a remnant of its exterior maroon paper; boards have subtle faux alligator-grain pattern but are well rubbed and stained with wear along edges particularly at all corners; front board's title lettering heavily dulled with some flaking loss and thus now difficult to discern. Edges toned with soiling and staining. Text block is holding. Old faded pencil ownership inscription on front pastedown; varied soiling, staining, and foxing/toning to leaves throughout with a few pencil marks and some edge-wear. Various clippings, recipe notes, etc. errantly laid-in. Sold as. Evidently a scarce if not rare Troy, Ohio cookbook for OCLC does not locate a single copy of this 1897 first edition nor its 1902 second edition at any member institution (however OCLC does cite copies of the 1910 third edition at Harvard, Ohio State, and University of Nebraska-Lincoln). {Shelf #1}. Book Description [Troy, OH - Piqua, Ohio]: [Troy Altrurian Club - The Magee Bros. Co.], 1910., 1910. Flawed copy. Enlarged third edition (as stated upon copyright page). Collates as [fp], [ffep], [ffly], [5-9], 10-246, [10], [rfep], [rp]. Hardcover: H 22.5cm x L 15.25cm. Original dark maroon boards well rubbed with wear along edges; front board's gilt title quite dulled/rubbed and barely discernable; shallow losses at frayed spine ends but with various losses lengthwise along joints. Reddish-purple text block edges. Lacks pages 1-4 which are a title leaf and probably a preceding half-title; first text leaf present is pages 5-6 with copyright on recto and brief essay on verso; full title is taken from OCLC citation as front board's dulled title is simply "Altrurian Cook Book" without the remaining subtitle. Pencil ownership inscription on front pastedown; handwritten recipe in pencil on rear free endpaper verso; top corners of pages 81-82, 97-98, 143-146, 209-210 creased from past fold-downs; soiling and foxing/toning strongest on initial and rear leaves but with occurrences and some scattered stains to interior leaves; various clippings, recipe notes, etc. errantly laid-in. Sold as is but still a very uncommon if not scarce Troy, Ohio cookbook. OCLC locates copies of this 1910 third edition at only three member institutions and no copies of its 1897 or 1902 predecessors. {Shelf #2}. Bookseller Inventory # JUN17-08563
