thick 4to. later cloth. 512 pages. First edition. (Bigmore & Wyman II, 259). With twenty plates including a full color frontispiece and a full-page example of raised lettering used for printing for the blind. About 1700 articles covering all aspects of the book and its production have been written by the famous authorities of the day. The many illustrations in the text are especially useful. Rebound in cloth with owner's name stamped in corner of front cover (J.B. Krauss) and with his bookplate on front pastedown. Edges of many pages, especially plates, show a stain. This well-received Encyclopaedia was reviewed in the Printer's Circular for March 1871: "Besides innumerable engravings intended to illustrate the especially practical portions of the work, we have a score of full-page illustrations in black and colored inks [reproduced here in black-and-white], prepared in superior style at great expense, to exhibit the growth of the art [of printing] by admirable fac similes of early printing; representations of machinery at different epochs; the processes of type-founding; the combination of colors; lithography; the portraits of the reputed inventors of printing; as well as many other matters.". Book Description Menamin & Ringwalt,, Philadelphia:, 1871. Condition: Good. First edition. This remains a major reference for American printing history [Bigmore & Wyman p.259, Appleton p58]. Illustrated with 38 full-page plates including a beautiful colored chromolitho frontis, an example of printing for the blind, and a double-spread color facsimile of a leaf from the Gutenberg Bible, as well as 165 illustrations in the text. Maroon cloth with bevelled edges, gilt lettering and decoration, including an elaborate cover gilt pictorial featuring Franklin surrounded by nine prominent pioneer type founders. Small 4to, measuring approximately 8 x 11". Good or better with spine and edges faded, spine ends frayed, front endpaper torn (repaired with small pieces of tape) and skinned where small label removed, and some dampstaining to upper margins but interior otherwise bright and clean.
