Book Description Boston - Cambridge, MA: Houghton Mifflin Company - The Riverside Press [Works Progress Administration - WPA], 1938., 1938. Early reprint (lacks date at the foot of title page per Houghton's contemporary practice). lxiv, 430 pages plus unpaged plates. Hardcover: H 20.75cm x L 14.25cm. Lacks dust jacket. Blue cloth lightly rubbed with some light staining/toning; small patch of surface abrasion and two nicks to cloth at upper spine; spine and front board's gilt stamping dulled and slightly flaked but remains legible. Strong toning to text block edges; a few leaves have negligibly shallow nicks at their fore-edges. City map illustration to front endpapers which are mildly toned; several small chips, foxing, and some toning to rear endpapers and pocket; a few scattered spots of light soiling to interior pages which, overall, remain quite clean. Binding is firm. Still a very good- copy. A few creases to the foldout color map present in rear pastedown pocket. With usual brief essay by WPA Administrator Harry L. Hopkins, introductory letter by New Orleans Mayor Robert Maestri (also the guidebook's co-operating sponsor), Preface by Lyle Saxon and Edward P. Dreyer, eight unpaged sections of b/w plates (mostly photos but including six illustrations by Caroline Durieux), b/w illustrations as chapter headpieces and/or tailpieces, Glossary, Bibliography, and Index. Primary text within three sections titled as "New Orleans: The General Background," "Economic and Social Development." and "Sectional Descriptions and Tours" further divided into numerous chapters reviewing "History," "Racial Distribution," "Folkways," "Architecture," "Creole Cuisine," "The Carnival" (i.e. Mardi Gras), "Cemeteries," "Some Negro Cults," etc. Perhaps the best city guide published under the WPA auspices but, of course, New Orleans' insouciance provides content unique among American cities.
