Incomplete copy; with only 57 plates including engraved title-page, and approximately half of text; no letterpress title, no half-title. With frontispiece, engraved title, 55 other steel-engraved plates (the majority with tissue-guards), and pages 1-20 & 29-124 when text abruptly ends mid-sentence. Views mainly of Canada, a few of the United States, a good number featuring shipping in rivers and lakeside waters; in variable conditions - 10 plates clear of faults, the others with one or two (and a few with three) of the following faults: dampstains affecting image (4 plates), dampstains confined to margins (4), foxing (5), light foxing (29), light tanning towards outer edges of margins (8). Near-contemporary half maroon leather binding, spine with four raised bands and gilt lettering & decoration, maroon cloth-covered boards. Spine rubbed & chipped, and with two 2"-long splits at front edge - one at head, the other at foot. Boards patchy and age-darkened, edges rubbed, corners a little worn. Gilt edges of text-block rubbed. Pastedowns marked, owner's name on front pastedown; missing front flyleaf. Binding holding firmly; contents tight, with text generally clean, and majority of plates in good or good+ condition. A good plus copy in a full brown leather binding blocked and decorated in blind in darker brown and lettered and decorated in gilt on the spine and upper board. Five raised bands on spine. A fair amount of scuffing to the spine and board edges. Bevelled edges. All edges gilt. Marbled end-papers. Gift inscription dated 1871 but it is clear from a letter loosely laid in that the book predates that year. Pp.iv,140; [iv],106. Vol.I has a map. a title-page vignette and 65 engravings. Vol. II has a title page vignette and 51 (of 52) engravings, lacking the engraving at page 92. A collection of engraved views of America from drawings produced by Bartlett during four trips taken from 1836 to 1839. Volume I contains 66 plates including a frontis portrait of the artist, plus a map with his route outlined in red, and an engraved title. Volume II contains 52 plates plus an engraved title - a total of 118 plates by Bartlett plus portrait, map and engraved titles (complete). Full black morocco lettered and extensively decorated in gilt, slightly raised spine bands, all edges gilt, gilt tooled inner dentelles. Extremeties rubbed, a bit of light chipping to the spine ends of volume II, contents sound with foxing that ranges from very light to rather heavy, with the heaviest at the beginning and end of each volume. Small dampstain at upper edge of volume I affects the margins of three plates in volume I, dampstain in volume II affects the engraved title and title page of volume II. A handsome set.
