About the Book

Bibliographic Details

Publisher: New York: Bloom & Smith, Printers, 73 Fulton Street

Publication Date: 1862

Binding: Soft cover

Book Condition: Very Good

60pp., plus two pages of ‘Whistle Signals.’ 24mo. First edition. Original thin printed wraps, sewn as issued. Half-dollar sized loss of paper to back wrap, affecting some type. Some gnawing blank endsheets at rear and just a bit to foredge of wraps and first few pages, affecting no type. Otherwise, clean, with a remarkably preserved backstrap. An extremely ephemeral piece; few of these could have survived. In his introduction, Balling says he wrote this work to benefit the war widows of his old regiment, the First New York Volunteers, which he served as a captain until an early-war wound cause his retirement from the field. A native of Norway, Balling sketched Lincoln in the White House, executed portraits of high-ranking Federal generals, and earned fame for his a large depiction of Grant and 26 of his senior officers. Not in any available reference. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-10045326871
