Description:

1st Printing. Signed. 360 pages. Published in 2011. The author's book-length account on subject. One of the greatest literary texts of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Harold Bloom's "The Anatomy of Influence". It amounts to his intellectual autobiography. His influential "The Anxiety of Influence" (1973) is more than forty years old, middle-aged to Bloom's old age. "The Anatomy of Influence" alludes not to Northrop Frye's "The Anatomy of Criticism" (1957), which his earlier book does, but to Richard Burton's "The Anatomy of Melancholy" (1621). Among other illuminations, two in particular stand out. First: His theory of influence was strictly about poetry insofar as it remains the greatest literary art, the only form that can be placed on the same level as music. Bloom's emphasis on poetry is a rejection of contemporary culture. If the future is the Internet, the mobile app, the blog, and "supermarket" fiction, that is to say, degraded media, why should Bloom (or any other self-respecting critic) even bring up the question of influence, which is about the difficulty of achieving originality? Bloom prides himself on being an unyielding and rebarbative anachronism in the Age of Google and Facebook, for this is what "literature as a way of life" finally means. Second: He insists that literary criticism, including his own, is an achievement, but not an art. There is a simple reason why Bloom somewhat disparages his own vocation: If it is any good, literary criticism is about something in particular, an opinion that is so profound it becomes wisdom, and gives pure joy. There are great critics whose work will endure (Bloom being one of them) versus mediocre poets and writers. Still, literature is about everything, joy and inescapably so, pain. Except for a few transcendent geniuses (Shakespeare), it is an impossible calling. Every poem (that is actually published) was abandoned rather than finished by the poet, which is why poetry is such a demanding and unpopular art, even among avid readers. An absolute "must-have" title for Harold Bloom collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the half-title page by Harold Bloom. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great book. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. The greatest living literary critic. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER HAROLD BLOOM TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0300167601. Bookseller Inventory #
