ANIMAS CANON, SPECIAL DENVER & RIO GRANDE RAILWAY TRAIN of WILLIAM HENRY JACKSON, along the Silverton Branch at Rockwood Point, circa 1882 (Colorado). Imperial-size albumen image mounted on original mat board. Photograph dimensions: 13-1/4 inches by 10 inches; excellent tones and clear and concise detail. Photograph in near fine condition. Original cream-colored board dimensions: 20 inches by 16 inches. Photograph of Engine #92 of the Denver & Rio Grande Railway with the special passenger car lent to William Henry Jackson for the photographic expeditions commissioned by Jay Gould in 1881-1882. Train stopped between Durango and Silverton, Colorado, near Rockwood Point above the Rio de Los Animas. Intriguing example of one of Jackson¿s ¿staged¿ images for the promotion of The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. According to academic Peter B. Hales, the images Jackson made in the Canon of the Rio Las Animas illustrated ¿how delicately Jackson worked out the physics of balancing ¿ picturesque natural phenomena ¿ against the signs of man ¿.¿.
