Original dark purple patterned cloth; some staining to boards; small chip at rear board's top right corner adjacent to spine; mild sunning to spine cloth with fraying at ends plus small cloth loss and short tear at head; spine's gilt stamping dulled but still easily legible. Toning to edges with several light stains to bottom edge. Dark brown endpapers; peeled remnant of past owner's name-address label at front free endpaper's top right; dark moisture staining at bottom fore-edge corners of several early leaves; occasional foxing and scattered small dark stains to interior pages; toning to pages 208-209 caused by collection of Civil War related newspaper clippings dating from 1880s to early 1900s plus personal business card (also probably early 1900s) for Lookout Maintain guide B.C. McCauley. Binding slightly stressed between 208-209 caused by laid-in material but all retained for its relevance; binding otherwise firm. Else a very good- copy. "Preface to the Fourth Edition" on page 5. Seventeen b/w steel plate engravings including frontispiece portrait and opposing b/w pictorial title leaf with guard sheets and all on unpaged leaves; nine b/w wood engravings on paged and unpaged leaves all present as called for but six of which are located at different spots than what is specified on page 6's illustration list; lithograph color maps between 380-381 and 458-459.
