About this Item

First Edition, and the first issue other then the limited numbered printing. 8vo, original blue cloth lettered and framed in orange. 448 pp. An honest copy of this award-winning novel, typical signs of age and mellowing to the cloth, the hinges a bit shaken and ex-libris with label and owner’s stamp on the front endpaper but in all a well preserved and collectable copy. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. Sinclair Lewis’ 1925 novel, arguably one of the earliest to deal with the culture of science, has been inspirational for several generations of medical students. The title character, Dr. Arrowsmith, is a progressive, even something of a rebel, and often challenges the existing state of things when he finds it wanting. The novel won the 1926 Pulitzer Prize, though Lewis refused to accept the award. In his letter to the committee Lewis explained, "[the] terms are that the prize shall be given ‘for the American novel published during the year which shall best present the wholesome atmosphere of American life, and the highest standard of American manners and manhood.’ This phrase, if it means anything whatsoever, would appear to mean that the appraisal of the novels shall be made not according to their actual literary merit but in obedience to whatever code of Good Form may chance to be popular at the moment.".
