Synopsis: ARTPIX, a not-for-profit CD-ROM journal of contemporary art, announces the publication of ARTPIX 3, featuring contemporary art from New Zealand. Four curators – Robert Leonard, Julie Paama-Pengelly, Megan Tamati-Quennell and Jim Vivieaere – have produced projects that introduce the art and artists of New Zealand. Together the projects make a statement regarding New Zealand society, most importantly, issues addressing the country’s multicultural mix. The curatorial components include artists’ multimedia projects, artists’ video projects, video tours of artists’ studios, interactive artists’ texts and curatorial essays, and an image archive and biography for each artist.
This is New Zealand is an interactive multimedia essay written by Robert Leonard that addresses New Zealand's bicultural society and those issues affecting it today. The user can click on highlighted words within the essay to bring up additional texts, video, audio, images and artists’ works. The essay is illustrated by the work of three artists: Bill Hammond, Michael Parekowhai and Ava Seymour.
Julie Paama-Pengelly’s component, Ta Moko is NOT Tattoo, examines traditional ta Moko in contemporary times and how it is perceived by Maori and non-Maori. The work of seven Maori artists is featured in slide shows and interactive pieces, and a counter-commentary focuses on the use of ta Moko in the media and for commercial interests. The artists are Shane Cotton, Jacqueline Fraser, Lyonel Grant, Rangi Kipa, Ngahiraka Mason, Lisa Reihana and Saffronn Te Ratana.
Te Ao Tawhito, Te Ao Hou - Old Worlds, New Worlds, curated by Megan Tamati-Quennell, presents the work of two artists working in the Polynesian spirit. Both artists - John Pule and Lisa Reihana - draw from traditional narratives and art forms, one in an interactive poem, the other in video.
Jim Vivieaere’s Part Umbra Penumbra tours the studios of four Auckland artists, whose work reflect on a South Pacific aesthetic, playing with light and shadow, reflection and absorption, and grids and patterns. The artists are Chiara Corbelletto, Graham Fletcher, Andrea Low and Peter Roche.
