Synopsis: Reveals the inner workings of the Museum of Natural History through historical anecdotes and descriptions of how exhibits are researched, prepared, and maintained.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 3 Up Ranging in variety and scope from the common house mouse to flesh-eater Antrodemus to the Hope diamond , these vignettes describe the fascinating oddities assembled in the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History. Revealed are the difficulties in reconstructing life forms and the remarkable ingenuity employed to create exhibits in a believable and realistic format . Black-and-white photos include several rare finds from the 1880s. These, perhaps, would have more dramatic impact if other, more recent photos were in color. However, this is a minor point given the overall beauty of the book. Paired nicely, illustrations and text complement the overall format. The chapters, varied in length from four to eight pages, will entice younger, less sophisticated readers while supplying sufficient "meat" to satisfy the curiosity of older, more skillful readers. The index contains "see" and "see also" references and includes both general and specific terms and short phrases. Well-written and unique its brevity and variety, this is an engaging book with tantalizing tidbits of information that create an urge for an in-the-flesh look at the museum's artifacts. Charlene J. Lenzen, Hales Corners Lutheran School, Wis.
