About this Item

2 volumes. Second edition, published just one year after the first. With the chart and 21 engraved plates and views of the Hawaiian Islands, Alaska and the Northwest. 8vo, full contemporary tree calf, expertly and beautifully restored at the back with fine period style work, raised bands, red morocco lettering labels gilt. An absolutely superb copy of this highly important narrative. A FINE COPY OF THIS IMPORTANT BOOK. Ellis was a surgeon’s mate during Cook’s third voyage, first on the "Discovery" and later on the "Resolution", and "gives quite a good history of the expedition" (Hill, 95). Captain Clerke, in his dying letter to Sir Joseph Banks, commended Ellis, but Ellis forfeited Banks’ regard by publishing his account of the voyage in contravention of the Admiralty instruction to surrender all journals and logs. It appears that, in needing money, Ellis sold his narrative to a bookseller for fifty guineas. Thus the first editiion of Ellis’ account was published two years before the official narrative, and preceded Samwell’s NARRATIVE OF THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN JAMES COOK by four years. This second edition was published just one year after the first---still preceding the official account and Samwell’s---and "follows the first practically without alteration, with exception of the title-pages" (Hill, 95). "The fine plates are among the earliest published on the Hawaiian Islands, Alaska and the Northwest" (Hill, 95). Bookseller Inventory # 20521
