Utilitarian, feminist, abolitionist, free trader and world traveller; the author was an astute observer of her own and other cultures. Involved from early 1830 in the US abolitonist movement, Chapman was Garrison's chief lieutenant in the Mass. Anti-Slavery Society. This volume includes 460 pages of memorial tributes to Martineau.
