About this Item
Manuscript in ink, 4to (235 x 190mm), two pages, in French, with integral address leaf. A letter from an expatriate Irishman in France: he writes to the Parisian banker that he is sending his letters of credit to him for safe keeping until he arrives in Paris in 12 days' time: they will be delivered by the Chevalier Duckenfield, who is departing that evening for the city. The recipient has annotated the letter: 'fitz-Gerald pau[vre?] irlandais 1777' - perhaps Fitzgerald subsequently wanted more from the banker than just a favour. What is clear, however, is that this is not the Irish nationalist Lord Edward Fitzgerald (1763-98), who is known to have been in France at this time, at a military academy - the writer refers to his wife, and the writing is clearly not that of a fifteen-year-old.
