About this title

Synopsis:

Book by Awiakta, Marilou

About the Author:

An internationally respected poet from Appalachia and the seventh generation of her family to grow up there, Awiakta speaks of our contemporary quest for the spirit in the clear, musical cadence of the mountains. The U.S. Information Agency chose Abiding Appalachia and her second book, Rising Fawn and the Fire Mystery, for the 1985 global tour of its show, "Women in the Contemporary World." At the University of California, Riverside, the poem "Motheroot" from Abiding Appalachia is lined and inlaid in one border of a walkway in the Fine Arts Mall. The other border is a lined quote from Virgil. Quality Paperback Book Club offered Awiakta's third book, Selu: Seeking the Corn Mother's Wisdom, as a selection in 1994. Awiakta writes under her middle name. She was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Bill and Wilma McCormack Bonham, who moved to Oak Ridge in 1945. A graduate of the University of Tennessee, Awiakta reveived awards for Distinguished Tennessee Writer (1989), Outstanding Contribution to Appalachian Literature (1991), Educational Service to Appalachia (1999), and the Appalachian Heritage Writer's Award (2000). She is profiled in the 1994 Oxford Companion to Women's Writing in the United States. Awiakta and her husband, Paul, live in Memphis, Tennessee.
