Synopsis: Abner's Journey to America is an historically accurate adventure story which tells of ten year old Abner, his family, his friends and members of his religious group who are forced to leave home in central Europe in the 1730s. They not only encounter many dangers including pirates, storms, thieves, illness, death, little food and bad water, many find that to pay for their passage to America they must become indentured servants. Abner is among them. How he faces these dangers, his relationships with other refugees and how he grows to accept whatever lies ahead makes a compelling story. Liberally sprinkled with Pennsylvania Dutch dialect, customs and folklore, readers are in for a rare treat in this engaging story which takes them back to a time when refugees by the thousands were caught up in religious persecution that was based on the laws of central Europe. Although the subject is heavy, the story is not. Abner and the other children find ways to enjoy themselves no matter what the circumstances

About the Author: Known for her sense of humor, Louise M. Coffman, a Californian, accompanied her husband to his Pennsylvania Dutch country after WWII. The language and culture, so different from what she was accustomed to, made a lasting impression. Fifty years later she drew on those memories, her interest in history, her faith, her teaching, her mothering, and that sense humor to create Abner's Story, Abner's Escape, and Abner's Journey to America. She finished the third book just before her eightieth birthday. To help to preserve the rapidly disappearing Pennsylvania Dutch culture, she teaches and speaks publicly. She and her husband travel, are active in church, parents of three, grandparents of six and great grandparents of six. They live in York, Pennsylvania.
