Abortion in the Seventies is the edited proceedings of the 1976 Western Regional Conference on Abortion held in Denver, Colorado from February 27-29, 1976. It was edited by Warren M. Hern, M.D., M.P.H., and Bonnie Andrikopoulos, R.N., who were the conference organizers. It was first published in 1977 by the National Abortion Federation in New York and is now published by Alpenglo Graphics, Boulder, Colorado. Participants in the conference, whose presentations are chapters in the book, include many nationally recognized leaders from various professions in the fields of medicine, law, public policy, and public health. Among the participants were Irvin Cushner, M.D., M.P.H., Jane Jodgson, M.D., F.A.C.O.G., Hon. Richard D. Lamm, Governor of Colorado, Cyril C. Means, Jr., Karen Mulhauser, Jean Pakter, M.D., M.P.H., Jeannie Rosoff, Hon,.Patricia Schroeder, Christopher Tietze, M.D., Louise Tyrer, M.D., F.A.C.O.G., and Sarah Weddington, Of Counsel, Roe v. Wade. Contents include Medical Aspects of Abortion, Public Health Aspects of Abortion, Evaluation of Abortion Services, Abortion Nursing, Counseling and Psychological Aspects of Abortion, Education and Information, Economic and Health Insurance Aspects of Abortion, Legal Aspects of Abortion, Legislative and Political Aspects of Abortion, and remarks by public officials including Governor Richard Lamm, Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder, Texas State Representative Sarah Weddington, greetings from the White House by Betty Ford, remarks by officials of the US Commission on Civil Rights and the National Academy of Sciences. Presentations are followed by transcripts of discussion among participants and observers. The Western Regional Conference on Abortion was the first major national conference on abortion held since the 1971 Conference on Abortion Techniques and Services held in New York City. It brought together many physicians, nurses, administrators, and other health care leaders as well as public policy experts who were instrumental in forming what become the National Abortion Federation, a national non-profit organization dedicated to the availability and safety of abortion services. 46 Illustrations, 5 color photographs, 3 black and white phonographs. About the Author:

Warren M. Hern is a physician in private practice in Boulder, Colorado, where he specializes in abortion services and family planning. He is a 1965 graduate of the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He received his public health training at the University of north Carollina School of Public Health, then served as Chief of Program Development and Evaluation in the Family Planning Division of the U.S. Office of Economic Opportunity, 1970-1972, in Washington, D.C. He has served on the American Public Health Association Subcommittee on Family Planning Methods and assisted in the preparation of the APHA s Recommended Program Guide for Abortion Services. He is a member of the Board of Directors of both the National Abortion Federation and the National Abortion Rights Action League. He is also on the editorial board of Advances in Planned Parenthood, the official journal of the Association of Planned Parenthood Physicians, and is a Diplomat of the American Board of Preventive Medicine. Bonnie Andrikopoulos has been active in women s issues for many years. She is currently the lobbyist for the Colorado National Organization for Women, and Delegate-at-Large to the Steering Committee of the National Women s Political Caucus. For two years, she served as the Colorado board member of the National Abortion Rights Action League. She received her nurse s training at the University of Wyoming College of Nursing. She is a Director of the Abortion Referral and Counseling Service of Colorado, a sponsoring organization of the Western Regional Conference on Abortion.
