About this Item

31p. Softcover in original wrapper. 23cm. First [blank] leaf has a small rectangular piece of wood attached by a piece of later thin wire (replacing the original wire which had succumbed) next to an ink inscription: "To Charlotte Fleming at Lincoln's Tomb April 30, 1925. accompanying a piece of wood from Lincoln's Springfield home. Embossed stamp ("H. W. Fay Custodian Lincoln's Tomb Springfield. Illinois") at top of the leaf: OCLC has an entry for a 1924 edition of this oft-reprinted pamphlet which is described as having "a piece of wood (in pocket). We assume that those pieces were also from Lincoln's home. Fay apparently also dispensed on a limited basis copies, such as this one, with a piece of wood from Lincoln's home attached by wire to selected visitors. In this case, Charlotte was the teenage daughter of Joseph Barclay Fleming, an important Chicago lawyer. Bookseller Inventory # 86107
