About this Item

Reviews of Modern Physics, Vol. 28, No. 1, January 1956. pp. 53-74 pp. (Lancaster): American Physical Society, 1956. Large 8vo. (266 x 205 mm). 542 pp, [1] pp. Port. photo of Albert Einstein, one plate (port. photo of J.J. Thomson), figs., tables. Later green cloth, gilt-stamped spine title. Near fine. ORIGINAL PAPER BY NOBEL PRIZE WINNER HAROLD C. UREY, WITH HANS SUESS, CONCERNING THE ABUNDANCE OF THE ELEMENTS IN THE UNIVERSE. "American chemist Harold C. Urey received the 1934 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discovery of heavy hydrogen (deuterium), which proved to be of enormous importance in understanding both energy generation in the Sun and stars and conditions in the early Universe, where all the deuterium that exists today was produced. Astronomers also remember him for a definitive table of the abundances of the elements, compiled in collaboration with Hans Suess, which guided the modern understanding of nucleosynthesis in stars." [Hockey]. "During his years at the Fermi Institute, Urey applied his knowledge of isotope chemistry to other scientific fields. . . In cosmology he prepared a study in 1956, with the chemist Hans Suess, that explained the origins and relative natural abundance of elements and isotopes in the universe." [Wasson]. In addition to the paper from Suess and Urey, there are numerous other papers of interest in this collection such as J. Robert Oppenheimer's tribute to Einstein and a paper by 1971 Nobel prize winner Dennis Gabor, the father of holography. Provenance: David Middleton (b. 1920), noted pioneer in the field of statistical communication theory (last name gilt-stamped on spine). Hockey, Biographical Encyclopedia of Astronomers, Vol. 2, p. 1162; Wasson, Nobel Prize Winners, p. 1081. Bookseller Inventory # S10338
