Book Description Polaris Press, Reading PA, 1953. Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. John T. Brooks (illustrator). First Edition. According to Owings and Chalker, the first 500 copies of this were numbered and bound in full cloth; this is copy 387. This is one of the copies without a dustjacket, in the original slipcase. Unfortunately, the slipcase has been attacked by a cat, resulting in many small scratches, making it look quite worn. There are two tiny cat-claw punctures on the spine of the book as well. Uncommon these days. Seller Inventory # 001385

Book Description Reading, PA: Polaris Press, Number 1421 of the First Edition of The Abyss of Wonders, Volume Two of The Polaris Fantasy Library, Limited Edition of 1,500., 1953. Octavo, burgundy cloth (hardcover), silver letters, 190 pp. Very Good+, with light soiling to page edges; in a Very Good dust jacket with light edgewear and darkened spine. From dust jacket: There has always been a fascination, an aura of glamor, surrounding the isolated corners of the earth, areas like the Gobi Desert, which have been visited but rarely in modern times. Tales by the score have been written with these modern places as their setting -- tales of forgotten peoples, of alien civilizations, of hidden treasures -- and these tales are generally referred to by readers of fantasy as "lost race adventures." "THe Abyss of Wonders" is a novel of this sort. These are some of the ingredients of this fantasy: at the outset, a mystery, racial memory, a suggestion of pre-incarnation. An adventure involving John McGoff (Shan Makaroff of the wizard blood) and his two friends of the Brotherhood of the Blue Wolf, Chinese Charley Ling and Russian Ivan; and the twany-haired and golden-eyed girl of his dream life. There's a lost race in a lost kingdom called Tahulo, which was once an island in the distant past when the Great Gobi Desert was a sea; a kingdom, surrounded by a sea of sand, which contains the tomb of that great Mongolian congueror, Genghis Khan -- awaiting there his next incarnation that he may again conquer the world. Added to these are the Abyss of Wonders itself, the controlled mirage, the intricate secrets and astounding super-science of that fanciful city -- all woven skillfully into a truly extraordinary tale of fantastic adventure. Literature, Fantasy, Limited Edition, First Edition. aslic. Seller Inventory # 3957bd

Book Description 1953 1st., 1953. Hardcover. Dust Jacket Included. First edition. Illustrated by John T. Brooks. Reading, PA: Polaris Press, 1953. First edition, one of 1,500 numbered copies. First published in "Argosy" in 1915, "The Abyss of Wonders" mixes Theosophy and superscience in this tale of a lost race in the Gobi Desert. The second of two publications by Polaris Press, representing Lloyd Arthur Eshbach's attempt to publish some noteworthy and neglected science fiction tales that did not seem to fit into his Fantasy Press program. Chalker and Owings assert that, despite the statement on the limitation page, only 990 copies of this book were printed. Some very mild wear along the spine of the dust jacket; otherwise an especially crisp and clean copy in the publisher's slipcase, which is faded and somewhat edgeworn. Chalker, J. & M. Owings: Science-Fantasy Publishers, p.350. Seller Inventory # 13666
