Synopsis: In Academic Tapestries, Alan Graham recounts the unique sometimes dark, sometimes humorous personalizing and professionalizing factors that go into making an educator in the modern social climate. For Graham, these included his early days growing up in the Historic Sixth Ward of Houston, Texas, and on the Houston Tennis Courts, followed by training at the University of Texas and the University of Michigan, postgraduate experience at Harvard and the University of Amsterdam, and a 38-year professorship in biological sciences and geology at Kent State University, where he directed specialized coursework in field studies. He was a union organizer in the early days of collective bargaining on college campuses, served as Grievance Committee chairman during the fateful days of protest at Kent State, and was his wife s partner during a successful seven-year federal gender discrimination suit. With this unique perspective he recounts happenings at an iconic place during pivotal times in the nation s history and the role these events are playing in shaping education and defining the modern American character. Alan Graham is the recipient of numerous awards and the author of several publications, including Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic History of North American Vegetation, Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic History of Latin American Vegetation and Terrestrial Environments, and A Natural History of the New World: The Ecology and Evolution of Plants in the Americas.
