How many times have you said 'I could write a book about it' when looking back on incidents that have occurred during your life? Well, I have on many occasions and eventually I came to the conclusion that I really did need to write that book!
The catalyst for most of my 'write a book' moments have been the characters that have passed through the doors of my shop in the small town of Holbeach in Lincolnshire, England.
So, armed with 40 years worth of diaries and memories, I set off on the journey through my life in retail. From my parents humble beginnings in the front room of the family home, working 365 days a year, we travel through expansion, the sad loss of my father when I was just 22 years old, through to the triumph of building the new shop he had always dreamed of. I have tried to combine the factual with the humorous within a historical context that spans the 50 years the shop has been trading. I have also tried to give some incite into the difficulties of trying to build and maintain an independent business in the face of bureaucracy and competition from the multiples.
Over the years there have been customers who have reduced us to tears of laughter and those that have left us wondering if we actually come from the same planet; hopefully I have brought them to life for you; I promise they are all real people, although in some cases I thought it prudent not to name them!
Whilst necessarily a personal story I am sure that anyone who has tried running a small business will be able to relate to the trials and tribulations involved. If you are contemplating setting up a business of your own then there might even be a few useful tips to be gleaned.
Of course all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, or so the saying goes, so I have included some of the more personal out of hours stories. These include my life long love affair with Lotus cars and the many pranks and parties that have helped alleviate some of the inevitable stress life presents on a daily basis!
Although I originally wrote and published the print version of my book for my own satisfaction and to leave something for posterity, I have been overwhelmed by the response to it. The print version is nearly sold out and after being asked to talk on radio and at various clubs and organisations I am beginning to think that maybe a small town shop keepers life is not so dull after all.
