Alexander Ormiston Curle (1866-1955), a former Director of the National Museum of Antiquities and of the Royal Scottish Museum, had found the first confirmed Viking longhouse in the British Isles. "Houses such as that at Jarlshof were the dwellings of the early Norse immigrants, and were in reality farm-houses . . . The term 'Viking,' as applied to their ownership, is apt to induce a wrong conception, the picturesque, but less reputable aspect of the lives of those immigrants, having quite eclipsed, in the mind of the public, their normal mode of existence.".
