He traveled to many plantation in the low country, makeing contacts and using Scripture to inspire others to join him. His plan was to sieze Charleston on 16 June 1822, but the conspirators were betryaed by one slave, who was repelled at the thought of killing his kindly master. On June 17, a court was called to investigate, and on June 22 Vesey was captured. Folloing a trial Vesey and 35 other blacks were sentenced to death, while 34 others were exiled from the state.
