Small tears at outer hinge, edges lightly foxed, o/w good. Cloth 8vo. Careful recording of the missionary's personal observations of the countryside and inhabitants. His description of the natural environment, is enjoyable and detailed, as is his account of the life he encountered. 20 pages are devoted to lengthy description of 20 species of trees, and 18 pages to the description of 33 species of birds. His observations of the Maoris include their treatment of children, medicine, dreams and superstitions, marriage and polygamy, infanticide, punishment, food, sports, tattooing, and fishing. 4-page appendix describes the shells which were collected by the author. 310 + 10pp. Index.
