Book Description C. W. Beaumont, 75 Charing Cross Road., London, 1926. 8vo. 6 x 9.5 inches. 42 + [4] pp. In quarter cloth over pictorial card covers. Deckled edges. Slight wear to edges but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by hand coloured vignette title page, by 5 full page framed line drawings in text and by headpiece vignettes. Decorative colophon at end. Robert Lloyd (1733-64) was a poet and satirist, educated at Westminster and Cambridge. ' Lloyd published a poetical epistle, The Actor (1760), nominally addressed to [Bonnell] Thornton, but in reality an extended panegyric of Garrick as exemplar nonpareil of the actor's art. The poem was popular, reaching a fourth edition in 1764. Its graceful pentameter couplets express the mid-century fascination with theatrical performance, and particularly with Garrick's powers in both tragedy and comedy. Garrick's ability to make the audience feel with him leads Lloyd to mock those conventions of the theatre intended to act directly on the spectators '(DNB). The poet and critic Edmund Blunden (1896-1974) contributed the introductory essay, On Familiar Poetry and Robert Lloyd; the illustrations are by the painter and etcher, Randolph Schwabe (1885-1948), war artist and Slade Professor of Fine Art, University College, London from 1930. Limited Edition, no.253 of 270 copies, coloured title-page and decorations throughout by Randolph Schwabe, with a long presentation inscription by Edmund Blunden [see below], original printed grey boards, spine lettered in gilt, a very nice copy. It is now many years since any of Lloyd's poetick [sic] productions came before me, one of which, The Actor, possessed merit but merit little calculated to summon purchases betimes to the booksellers. The machinery of critical inspection needs not to be set in motion." &c. "From an undiscovered MS. at Gough Square. In Douglas & Joan's book from their affectionate friend the Editor.
