About the Book

Bibliographic Details

Title: Adam and Eve and Eden

Publisher: Palos Verdes Estates

Publication Date: 1930

Binding: Hardcover

Book Condition: Very Good+

Decorative cloth over boards, handwritten paper label mounted to upper board; 11.5-by-15 inches; pp. 139, [1], with handwritten text, accompanied by full-color illustrations cut from unidentified (though, likely, multifarious) sources, and neatly affixed to every page. Our author clearly has some prior bibliophilic interest, as she identifies this work as an "Edition de luxe, limited to one manuscript copy," and the panache with which she designs her pages indicates a fond familiarity. Her choice of illustrations runs the gamut, all are full-color reproductions of drawings and paintings, but vary in style and subject from the impressionistic street scene, to the bold fashion illustration, pastoral landscape, architectural details, images of interiors, decorative objects, and more. A few artists' names are visible: McClelland Barclay, Edward A. Wilson, Eric, Kurt Godwin, Arthur Palmer, Samuel Josephs, Arthur Rackham, Floyd Bonar, Julius Delbos, Eleanor Parke Curtis, Will Lollingworth, William Wendt, Donna Schuster, Dick Brown, Maurice Day. Visually striking throughout, and she (perhaps) bends her story to give them center stage. The result is narrative silliness, tho delightfully so -- Adam and Eve meet again, generations later, as each of them travels all over the world (leaving no stone unturned, and often impossibly so, unless Star Trek is operating under the surface) looking for Eden -- or, at least, love.
