About this Item

The book is clean and tightly bound with some sunfading to the edges. The dust jacket has some smalll chips lacking at the corners, the top of the spine and a few small chips off the spine. ix, 102 clean and crisp pages. Loosely inserted in the book is a 1-1/2 page typed letter from John Holmes to "Bill" - (William C. Burto) (a colleague of John Holmes at Tufts) - signed "Cordially John"; and a typed, original poem by John Holmes - signed "John Holmes" in 1962. "Dear Bill, Here is a very new poem I wish you'd comment on, to help me be sure of what I am doing. I've been thinking about a couple of stupid anonymous letters I've had - and these always hurt me. But why suddenly I made the Parnell metaphor, I dont know.". The poem is a 14 line, typewritten poem titled: "Letters: A Metaphor". The first 3 lines are "They say the ambiguous Irishman, Parnell, / held at his arms' length a woman he loved / Out over a bridge-rail, to test her trust." John Holmes goes on to say he considers tearing the letters into tiny fragments, but no piece could be small enough. He folds them into his breast pocket to test his trust and the trust of someone he needs, who needs him. Bookseller Inventory # 12009
