8vo, pp. [8], 155, [1]; 2 portraits; presentation slip tipped in at the title page; original blue cloth stamped in gilt on upper cover and spine, t.e.g.; light wear at the extremities; very good. With the ownership initials of "E. L. L. 7-27-23" - i.e. Edward Lawrence Leahy, United States Senator from Rhode Island and a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island. Leahy notes on the endpaper pages 111-116, and he has made pencil markings in the margins of those pages, all relating to Colt's writings on freedom of religion. Colt (1846-1924) was also a U.S. Senator from Rhode Island and a United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and previously was a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island.
