About this Item

This is a FACSIMILE edition of the true first edition of this exceptional classic, with 174 illustrations by E. W. Kemble. True first editions of this novel are running up to $15,000 as of 2016, so this exemplary facsimile edition, containing the earliest possible combination of issue points in a cloth-bound copy, is a worthy reproduction. Originally published by Charles L. Webster, New York, in 1885. Issue points: First state of the double frontispiece of Twain's bust with tissue guard (imprint of Heliotype with tablecloth visible and without sculptor's name on shoulder, and E. W. Kemble full page illustration of Huckleberry Finn; Tissue guard present over bust of Twain; Copyright notice dated 1884; illustration page 13, with caption of "Him and Another Man" listed as page 88 (first state); 11th line from bottom of p. 57 reads ".with the was." (first state); Heliotype Printing Co. imprint is present, the heading for chapter 6, on p. 9 reads "decided (later this was corrected to "Decides"; on p. 13 "him and another man" reference is to p. 88 not 87; p. 57, 11 lines up, says ".with the was." not .with the saw.; P. 143 in line 7 down from the top, part of b in "body" is missing; on p. 155 there is a font difference in the final 5 in 155. A beautiful copy that has minor wear to the edges and corners comes with an as new illustrated slipcase. No marks, scuffs, etc. Note to buyers: (From Addison & Sarova Auctioneers Catalog 1010, 7 Nov 2015, Lot 129): The first printing of 30,000 copies was printed on different presses and this caused some minor variations in the first printings due to plate damage. Only three changes of consequence were made after the first printing. As noted above, the present example contains the 3 major issue points. The "88" on page 13 was corrected to "87," "with the was" was corrected to "with the saw" on page 57, and "decided" was corrected to "decides" in the subsequent issues. As with all cloth-bound copies, page 283 in this example is a cancel with the more modest illustration. Further, some copies were printed that lacked the final "5" in page 155, and some had the final "5" present but in a different font; however, neither variant has priority. The present example lacks the last "5" of 155. This copy has the later state of the frontispiece with the sculptor's name present on the edge of the bust; however, the frontis was printed separately and inserted at random, and it has no bearing on the books' priority.
