About this title

The book is a witty and honest piece of writing straight from the heart of one of Singapore's best loved sons. Written in an unpretentious style that is characteristic of Dick Lee, the book recounts the author's many escapades, adventures trials and triumphs. Narrated in the first person, Dick provides a candid picture of his life, while showcasing facets of Peranaken culture. He takes us back to the days of Talentime, back-breaking platform shoes and dazzling hot pants. The rebel-songwriter relives his varied career and traces the highs and lows of Singapore's popular culture.

About the Author:

Dick Lee's headlong dive, at the age of 16, into the world of music and fashion led to a deep exploration of his identity as a Westernised Asian, and resulted in many albums and musicals which question the role of tradition in a rapidly changing world. Born and bred in colonial Singapore, his confusion culminated in the award-winning album 'The Mad Chinaman' which led to his career in Asia. His subsequent work, including the composition of movie theme songs and sell-out musicals in Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore, secures his position as one of the most prolific Asian composers today. Of the many awards he has received, he treasures amongst them 'Best Theme Song' at the Hong Kong Film Academy Awards, 'COMPASS Composer of the Year' and the 'Fukuoka Arts and Culture Award' which he won for consistently examining the evolving role of Asian identity in popular culture.
