First Confederate Edition. 426 pp Illustrated with litographed frontispiece portrait and 11 (of 12) litographed plates. 71/4 X 5, original printed front wrapper. Philip was first issued serially in London, (1961-62) and then published 1862 in London, New York and Leipzig. Parrish and Willingham 6573 (locating 18 complete copies); Harwell Confederate Hundred 90; Snowden, War Time Publications from the press of Walker, Evans and Cogswell, (Charleston 1922), pp 24-26: "(The publisher's) most notable, one may say audacious, effort, this war-time edition of Thackeray with the Columbia imprint is in great demand among collectors." The lithographed plates for this edition, illustrating scenes from the book, and also printed by Evans and Cogswell, are quite captivating. In this copy pp 97-98 and 103-104 are repeated. CONDITION: The front wrapper is soiled and worn, lacking the rear wrapper. The spine is partially perished. Several splits to the spine are present. The pages are dog-eared, particularly in the earlier sections. Some expected toning due to the quality of the paper. Lacking plate 10. This copy was obtained from a nationally known auction house, and is a Rare in any form. This copy will be sold As Is (should be seen in person, but pictures can be forwarded).
