About this title

Presents a collection of poems about the toucan, fruit bat, pangolin, and other animals.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 1-4?Finely crafted poetry, accompanied by lush, evocative illustrations. Each of the 14 poems concerns an animal, usually an exotic or endangered one such as the black rhino, cheetah, frilled lizard, or harpy eagle. Schertle delights in playing with language; though not long, the book is extraordinarily varied and filled with linguistic surprise. For instance, the advice to the frog?who is trying to escape a crane?suggests, "Take a breath, Slick Skin./Muck down, sink in./Don't make bubbles./Good luck, Grin Chin." A few pages later, the Galapagos tortoise recalls visitors to his ancient land, "the wanderers, the worshippers...the mariners, discoverers...the castaways, the murderers"?a complete switch in approach and tone. Green's paintings are double-page spreads with blue, gold, rose, lavender, and green predominating. Imaginative and playful, his pictures capture the essence of each creature: the mournfulness of the vulture, the velvety mystery of the bat. Occasionally, one must turn the page sideways in order to read the poem and get the full effect of the art. In addition to being an aesthetic delight, Advice for a Frog contains a plea for greater environmental awareness. A final page lists each animal and describes its condition in today's world. Five star. Don't miss it.?Ellen Donohue Warwick, Winchester Public Librasry, Winchester, MA
