About this Item

First Edition, in this format. Pages 4 pp.Large Fo. Unbound Newspaper. First Edition, in this format. Preface to C. Dickens, "The Life of Our Lord," Simon & Schuster, 1934. A reprint of a Dickens letter in a Vermont newspaper. Likely a piracy. The source is not clear. Often these stories in New England newspapers were misattributed. Most had a source in "HouseholdWords" or "All the Year Round," but this story is not in Lohrli, Oppenlander or Stone, the usual sources for articles in these journals. The account also is not in either of the three published volumes on Dickens' Journalism edited by Slater. Given the date, after Dickens' death, it is possible that the article was taken from his letters published at this time by his daughter and sister-in-law. We have been able to identify it as from a letter Dickens wrote in 1868 to his youngest son, Edward, who was going off to Australia to join his elder brother. The letter was referred to in the Publisher's Foreword to Dickens' "The Life of Our Lord," which had been written in 1846Ð49 but not published until 1934. Newspaper folded. Faint marginal stain. Else, Very Good. Bookseller Inventory # 8962
