About this Item

Small Octavo. vi, 209, (6) pp. publisher's ad, frontispiece. While the Wright Brothers invented the first self-powered machine that had controlled and sustained flight in a heavier-than-air machine, there were earlier attempts with limited flight but not with those standards. From balloons and gliders to Langley's attempt which crashed upon takeoff in 1903, the quest for flight was there but the value of this work is that he traces what was happening the preceding three years including Hirim S. Maxim's Experimental Machine pictured as the frontispiece and which was considered the most promising though it never left the ground. Bound in maroon cloth lettered and decorated in gilt, spine gilt, edges and spine end rubbed, two previous owner's bookplates and news clipping to front endpapers. A very good copy.
